Post this in a new blogpost on your Media blog called ‘Blog feedback and Learner Response’ then complete the LR tasks/questions below.
WWW: You’ve completed the three pieces of work set so far but we’ve got a lot more work to do if you want to reach the grade 9 you discuss in your introductory questions.
EBI: There are three major aspects you need to work on to improve your level in Media. Firstly, you confuse denotation and connotation in your advert analyses (WaterAid). It’s absolutely essential you learn this terminology and apply it accurately – this is the basis to all of Media Studies.
Secondly, you will need to add much more depth and detail to your media analysis over time. This means exploring all the different connotations there may be in a media text – which is likely to be many. You generally only offer a sentence or two per paragraph and it’s important we extend this over the next weeks and months writing media analysis. Look at this example to see what kind of in-depth analysis we’re after: http://ishachana2.blogspot.co.uk/2017/09/denotation-and-connotation.html
Finally, your written English needs to improve: there are far too many errors in punctuation and grammar. It is vital in EVERY piece of writing you produce that capital letters and full stops are used accurately. For your introductory questions, you don’t use capital letters for names – this is as basic as it gets.
LR: Firstly, type out the definition for denotation and connotation until you are 100% sure you understand the difference. Next, reflect on your first month of Media. What do you feel is your strongest piece of work so far? What is your weakest? What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course? How can you improve the depth and detail of your media analysis?
Denotation=the literal or primary meaning of a word, in contrast to the feelings or ideas that the word suggests.
Connotation=an idea or feeling which a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
I think my strongest piece of work so far is my film poster. I think my weakest is the water aid advert. I need to develop my definitions. I could spend longer analysing my work.
