Reception theory

1) What is the preferred reading of a media text?
The meaning the producers intend to communicate.

2) What is the oppositional reading of a media text?
The message is modified (partly accepted and partly rejected).

3) How does the Harry Brown trailer position the audience to respond to the teenage characters in the film?
The harry brown trailer has the preferred reading of teenagers as violent and aggressive. However the oppositional reading is that teenagers are outsiders to society and they need help.

4) Why might young people reject this reading and construct an oppositional reading of the trailer?

Young people may construct an oppositional reading as they believe that this is reflecting negatively on them as it is showing a stereotype that young people are violent so they may believe not all young people are like this.

5) Write a 200 word analysis of the McDonald's advert using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.

The McDonald’s advert emphasises the amount of vegetables in the burger, this is to make the audience think that the burger is healthy and delicious, this is the preferred reading of the advert. However the oppositional reading is that the burger doesn’t actually look like that, also that the burger barely has any vegetables in it so it isn’t healthy. The negotiated reading is that the burger may be nice and may slightly look like the picture however it is not healthy.

6) Now find your own advertisement and write a 200 word analysis using preferred, negotiated and oppositional readings.

The preferred reading of the advert is that the chocolate is slightly more healthy than other chocolates, however the oppositional reading is that the chocolate doesn’t have that much milk and is still unhealthy. Also the negotiatiated reading is that the chocolate is not as bad as other chocolates however it is still unhealthy.
